The Guilford County Animal Shelter is likely to remain under the county government’s umbrella, but the specifics of the long-term management arrangement remain unclear.
Deputy County Manager Clarence Grier will make a recommendation to the Guilford County Board of Commissioners at its regular meeting this evening. Both Grier and County Manager Marty Lawing declined to comment on the specifics of that presentation.
But the county has not solicited bids for a third-party entity to run the facility, making it unlikely that the shelter would be managed by any group other than a Guilford County government department.
Commissioners said they expect to hear — and vote on — a recommendation that the facility remain under the Guilford County umbrella.
“My expectation is that the county will run the shelter for the foreseeable future,” said Commissioner Jeff Phillips, the board’s vice-chairman. The county took over the shelter on an interim basis six weeks ago after the United Animal Coalition, a Greensboro-based nonprofit, saw its license revoked by the state Department of Agriculture because of dozens of documented instances of animal cruelty and neglect.
